  Reception. The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine awarded the album 4 stars and stated "There are a few ballads, and even when things are at their hottest, Parlan's understated playing is a cue for the group to keep it tasteful, but that relaxed atmosphere is part of the reason why On the Spur of the Moment is another winning effort from the underrated pianist".

  Parlan's most exciting recordings were made for Blue Note, particularly the ones that teamed him with bassist George Tucker and drummer Al Harewood. The trio was so close that they created music with one mind. On The Spur Of The Moment is particularly memorable for it .

  Horace Parlan's "On The Spur Of The Moment" is a classic hard bop meets soul jazz Blue Note session from the early 60s.   The Horace Parlan Quintet rides again!!! Almost every song is a gem. The Horace Parlan original 'On the Spur of the Moment', the epic 'Skoo Chee', written by Booker Ervin, with a surprisingly shouting Stanley Turrentine at the end of the tune, the fast played blues 'Al's Tune', also written by Booker Ervin, and a slower blues with 'Ray C.' (an ode to Ray Charles??), another song by Leon.
